Ethiopian tribesmen kill Kenya policeman at border

Reuters South Africa
NAIROBI (Reuters) - A Kenyan police officer has been killed by members of an Ethiopian tribal militia after a clash along the two countries' common border, Kenyan media said on Saturday.

The private Kenya Television Network said the officer from the paramilitary General Service Unit was killed late on Friday after 500 militiamen, believed to be from the Merille tribe, attacked the unit's camp.

The report said the 500 gunmen were on the counter-attack after the Kenyan officers repulsed them away from the waters of Lake Turkana, on the Kenyan side, after a shoot-out that lasted four hours.

Five other Kenyan officers are missing after the attack, which is believed to involve Ethiopian Merille tribesmen, the station added.

The reported location of the clashes, Todonyang, is a village that has been abandoned since 1997, when its two ethnic communities, Merille and Turkana, fought and dispersed into Ethiopia and Kenya respectively.

Kenyan government spokesman Alfred Mutua declined to comment on the report, saying he had no details.

Kenya's long borders with Sudan, Ethiopia and politically unstable Somalia care a constant source of security concerns.

Ethiopia: ONLF forces captured Yucub town

Ogaden Online
Reports reaching us from Yucub town, Dolo province say that Ethiopian troops based there have fled their camps after they could not cope with constant nocturnal attacks by Ogaden National Liberation Front [ONLF] forces.

In response to the myriad troubles Woyanel troops have been visiting upon civilians, ONLF forces pounded the two camps housing Ethiopian soldiers and their puppet militiamen with heavy artillery guns every night, with the heaviest attack on the camps occurring on the night of 3 February. Our reporter in the area said Ethiopian troops were eventually forced to flee to Warder town after incurring massive personnel losses and destruction of the camps.

World Number one Tennis Player R.Federer reduced to tears on visit to Ethiopia

By Barry Malone

World Number one Tennis Player R.Federer reduced to tears on visit to EthiopiaKORE ROBA, Ethiopia (Reuters) - World number one Roger Federer sends the ball spinning into the net.

His opponent, Ethiopian teenager, Jirata Demksa, smiles and prays the Swiss is having an off day.

But Federer just pauses and, taking a deep breath, serves a blistering ace.

The 17-year-old, realizing he's beaten, simply shrugs.

"He's the best tennis player ever," he says. "I am just lucky we played ping-pong."

Jirata says he will never forget taking two points from Federer in an impromptu game of table tennis at a school the tennis ace funds in the poor country.

For Federer, this week's visit to Ethiopia was one that moved him to tears....read more

Oromo Affairs: OLA unit defects: so where does the buck finally stop?

By Gumaa Guddaa

“The quality of leadership, more than any other single factor, determines the success or failure of an organization.” Fred Fiedler & Martin Chemers.

There is no doubt the commanders who went back with the fighters are wholly responsible for their actions. They should be blamed. Nevertheless, who should be overall accountable for what has happened? One might argue why someone should be responsible. But the first question must be the unit has been under the two factions of the Asmara Group; long time under the Shanee Gumii and recently under the Jijjirama Group albeit very brief. Therefore, the two leaders namely Dawud Ibsa and Kamal Galchu must take the blame. Had the unit attacked and overtaken Moyale these chaps would be the first to self-congratulate and take credit. Unfortunately, now that the unit has defected they must take the blame. Or do you think that these people in Asmara should not be held accountable? ...read more
