91 Ethiopian soldiers killed in Somalia

Roadside bombs and heavy clashes have reportedly killed at least 91 Ethiopian troops near Somalia's Lower Shabelle region, Weyne town.

Ethiopian soldiers, leaving Afgoye and Baidoa towns were targeted by roadside bombs planted earlier by the fighters of the Union of Islamic Courts, Press TV correspondent reported on Sunday.

The blasts left at least 60 Ethiopians killed and completely wrecked their three military vehicles, the report added.

The fighters then, using bazookas killed several others in a bloody battle which lasted for nearly 3 hours.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC), Abdi Rahim Isse Addow, confirmed that UIC fighters have seized the area. He claimed that more than 144 Ethiopian soldiers were killed in the clashes.

Children are dieing of hunger in Oromia

By Barry Malone

SIRARO, Ethiopia (Reuters) - Ethiopian mother Ayantu Tamon has lost a child to hunger every year for the last four and now cradles her severely malnourished and weakened three-year-old son Hirbu in her arms.

"I just hope God lets him live," she says. "I have only two children left."

Hirbu is being fed by drip at Rophi Catholic Church in Siraro, a remote farming area 350 km (220 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa.

He is one of 233 children who have been brought starving to the small Sisters of Mercy church in just the last three weeks.

The U.N. Children's Agency UNICEF says a recent drought in Ethiopia has caused a food crisis and estimates 126,000 children are suffering from severe malnutrition.

But the government and aid agencies are struggling to find money to help, with international food prices rising sharply.

UNICEF says 6 million Ethiopian children under the age of five may be at risk of malnutrition.

And the U.N. World Food Programme estimates 3.4 million of Ethiopia's more than 80 million people will need food relief from July to September.

"The great tragedy is that Ethiopia had been making some impressive improvements before this drought," said Viviane Van Steirteghem, UNICEF deputy representative in the country.

Ethiopia, sub-Saharan Africa's second most populous nation, had been cited as an example to other African countries after reducing its infant mortality rate to 123 deaths from every 1,000 births from 166 in just five years.

"UNFORTUNATE CHAIN"

Innovative schemes to reduce the impact of drought and train local people as health workers were also introduced and much praised internationally.

"It's a chain of unfortunate events that has led to this," says Lisetta Trebbi, Head of Relief the United Nation's World Food Programme in Ethiopia.

"We have drought -- a really poor rainy season -- and, of course, we have high food prices worldwide."

The global rise in food prices has hit the WFP hard.

The organisation now needs to raise $147 million to tackle Ethiopia's needs. Aid workers say the money isn't coming in time, with donors concentrating on disaster-hit China and Myanmar.

At Rophi Catholic Church, mothers hold their sick children in their laps, sitting on dirty sheets sweltering in the heat inside makeshift tents. "It's not like the normal sound of children crying," said one nun. "It's desperate."

The Sisters of Mercy and the local government were caring for the children who started arriving at the rate of about 20 a day to a height of 74 last Friday alone.

"There are more people out there who would normally depend on a harvest in July," Trebbi said.

"But, because of the drought, they will not now get that harvest and their food reserves will be gone. This situation is deteriorating very rapidly."

Amnesty Intl: Ethiopian troops commit atrocities in Somalia

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A leading human rights group on Tuesday accused Ethiopian troops in Somalia of killing civilians and committing atrocities, including slitting people's throats, gouging out eyes and gang-raping women.

In a new report, Amnesty International detailed chilling witness accounts of indiscriminate killings in the Horn of Africa country and called on the international community to stop the bloodshed.

Ethiopia's government said the report was unbalanced and "categorically wrong."

The London-based rights group said testimony it received suggested all parties to Somalia's conflict have committed war crimes. But it singled out Ethiopian troops, who are in the country to back Somalia's U.N.-sponsored government, for some of the worst violations.

Somalia's shaky transitional government invited Ethiopian forces into the country to help it battle Islamic insurgents. Somalia has been torn apart by years of violence between the militias of rival clan warlords.

The rights group said it obtained scores of reports of killings by Ethiopian troops that Somalis have described as "slaughtering like goats." In one case, "a young child's throat was slit by Ethiopian soldiers in front of the child's mother," the report says.

Ethiopia's Information Minister Berhanu Hailu said the report was "totally unfounded."

"Normally when they report they do not balance it out. They have to go and see the reality for themselves. They shouldn't report from abroad saying this is happening," he told The Associated Press in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.

Amnesty said some 6,000 civilians were reported killed and more than 600,000 were forced to flee their homes in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, last year.

"The people of Somalia are being killed, raped, tortured. Looting is widespread and entire neighborhoods are being destroyed," Michelle Kagari, Amnesty's deputy director for Africa, said in a statement from Nairobi that accompanied the report.

The report quotes testimony from some 75 witnesses as well as scores of workers from non-governmental organizations. People are identified only by their first names to protect them from retaliation.

In one testimony, Haboon, 56, said her neighbor's 17-year-old daughter was raped by Ethiopian troops. The girl's brothers tried to defend their sister, but the soldiers beat them and gouged their eyes out with a bayonet, Haboon was quoted as telling Amnesty.

"The testimony we received strongly suggests that war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity have been committed by all parties to the conflict in Somalia and no one is being held accountable," Kagari said.

Somalia has been mired in chaos since 1991, when warlords overthrew longtime dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and then turned on each other. Last year, Islamist militants took control of most of southern Somalia, including Mogadishu. Troops from neighboring Ethiopia deployed in December 2006 and ejected the Islamists from the capital.

But since then, Mogadishu has been caught up in a guerrilla war between the government and its Ethiopian allies and the Islamist insurgents.

Amnesty urged the U.N., African Union and others to act to halt the violence.

Oromos and Sidamas Unite, Forging Kushitic Unity against Abyssinian Tyranny

Dr. Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis
Determined to outmaneuver the evil Abyssinian projects for fratricide disputes between the equally oppressed and tyrannized Oromos and Sidamas, two leading fronts and organizations struggling for the liberation of the two historical Kushitic nations, the Sidama National Liberation Organisation (SNLO) and the Front for Independence of Oromia (FIO), issued a Joint Statement to highlight the need of unity among the two fraternal nations.

This represents a great moment in the History of the two subjugated nations, as it heralds greater synergy among all the oppressed Kushitic nations of Abyssinia, fallaciously re-baptized Ethiopia, in view of the impending collapse of Africa´s most loathed tribal tyranny, and most inhuman colonial relic.

From all parts of Africa, the eyes of all Kushitic nations, the Berbers of the Atlas, the Somalis of the Horn, the Hausas and the Fulanis, turn now to the highlands of Oromia and Sidama Land, as the liberation of the two nations, forged through Unity and Synergy, will herald a Great Kushitic Renaissance throughout Northern Africa.

We republish here integrally the Joint Statement, which reverberates more than 45 centuries of Kushitic Humanity, Noblesse and Civilization.

Sidama and Oromo Remain United Despite Barbaric Abyssinian Tactics!

Joint Statement by Sidama National Liberation Organisation (SNLO) and Front for Independence of Oromia (FIO)

April 13, 2008

Since the original Kushitic nations, namely the Oromos, the Sidamas, the Somalis, the Afars, the Kambattas, the Hadiyas, the Wolaytas, and the rest fell at the hands of barbaric Abyssinian colonial power in the period 1860 - 90, they have all been suffering intolerable hardship deliberately orchestrated and masterminded by the brutal occupiers. From the very beginning of this darkest era in the History of aforementioned nations, several millions of people have been mass murdered and indiscriminately slaughtered. Children and helpless elderly were mercilessly dragged to death, whereas hundreds of thousnads have been burnt alive. The sufferings of the aforementioned nations comprise of all kinds of injustice and have continued down to our times, involving additionally comprehensive expropriation of their natural resources.

The subjugated nations of the Oromos, the Sidamas, the Somalis, the Afars, the Kambattas, the Hadiyas, the Wolaytas, and the rest are still today systematically marginalised and deprived from enjoying all elementary aspects of cultural, religious, socio-economic and political life in their own historical territories. They all are tamed to eternal denigration, dehumanisation, slavery and human misery in an Empire - Cemetery of numerous nations.

At present time, therefore, Meles Zenawi´s regime is unable and can´t afford to act differently from its predecessors, thus perpetuating abhorrent practices of tyranny. Instead of implementing all the parameters of a civil 21st century society to achieve development and progress, Meles Zenawi´s regime is currently repeating previous cruelty that consists in Crime against the Mankind. The Abyssinian iintolerant regime is acting contrarily to all principles and values adopted by the Charter of the United Nations and the San Francisco Declaration. Instead of what represents a Value for the modern democratic societies, Meles Zenawi´s regime pursues the ages-old fallacious ´3000 years of Ethiopian history´ mantra´ - at the prejudice of its subjects.

The Oromo and Sidama Nations

The Oromo and Sidama nations are brothers and sisters, who share common origin and genuinely Cushitic ancestry. Their shared affinities are far much stronger, deeper and ampler than their dissimilarities.

Their egalitarian and genuinely African democratic governance systems, Gaada for the Oromos, and Luuwa for the Sidamas, reveal tremendous similarities, common conceptual approaches to human and social phenomena, and absolutely the same stance towards Life and Nature. Both systems have long become the main target of the successive Abyssinian rulers who have not spared any effort to undermine and dismantle them, without ever succeeding.

Furthermore, the distress of the Sidama and Oromo nations under the Abyssinian colonial yoke has lasted more than a century, as nothing changed and nothing improved for both still subjugated nations. Their common fate is another factor to unite them, as they share the same, numerous forms of injustice, involving intentional starvation, ultra-poverty, deprivation of elementary educational standards, and severe socio-economic decline. Both Kushitic nations are totally exposed to rampant human rights abuses and deprivation from elementary humanitarian help; the lives of the Oromos and the Sidamas reflect the bleakest moments of African History, as both nations cross an interminable desolation.
Instead of acknowledging the past malpractices and renouncing their old tyrannical methods, Meles Zenawi´s regime keeps interfering in the social and national issues of the subjugated nations, although they consist absolutely distinct entities deserving their own nationhood. To perpetrate the same barbaric acts against the Oromos, the Sidamas, the Somalis, the Afars, the Kambattas, the Hadiyas, the Wolaytas, and the other subjugated nations, the regime deploys great effort in instigating unnecessary conflicts between two down-trodden nations that equally suffering abject poverty and abhorrent Human Rights´ abuses that represent some of the darkest pages in the History of the Mankind. This inhuman and lawless policy does serve the regime by diverting the attention of the oppressed nations from the socio-economic calamities and the burden of political despotism for which the present regime and its predecessors are the only responsible.

As part of the Zenawi regime´s methodological approach, the adoption of the aforementioned polcies included the incident that took place between local residents belonging to the Oromo and Sidama sister nations in the district town Malgee Woondo, also known as Wondo Genet. Since the first week of April 2008, people from both sides were driven into unnecessary conflicts which have been deliberately and systematically orchestrated by the Abyssinian colonial masters and their local affiliates. The adverse events caused the death of over 40 innocent people from both sides who don´t have any fundamental differences. Ever since the incumbent Meles Zenawi´s dictatorial regime has taken over in late1991, they caused similar conflicts among various subjugated nations of Ethiopian Kushitic origin, which resulted in deaths of thousands of innocent people, further triggering the displacement of millions of affected populations and the destruction of scarce resources. These abhorrent and inhuman policies are adopted in order to allow the unpopular regime further remain on power.

Therefore, we feel obliged to solemnly declare that the Sidama and Oromo nations don´t have any fundamental differences possible to lead them to any sort of conflicts. Thus, the SNLO and the FIO:-

1. Emphatically and strongly condemn the acts of Abyssinian Meles Zenawi´s regime, which instigates unnecessary conflicts between two brother nations, and warn them to refrain from further interfering in the affairs of the two sister nations´ issues

2. Request the utmost vigilance of the nations of Oromo and Sidama, in order to successfully resist this sort of ´democracy´ embellished with the poisonous and hidden agenda of the Abyssinian regime, which attempts to sow bitterness and disparity between two down-trodden nations. And we ask both nations to get inspired by the lofty values of Gaada and Luuwa, and continue practicing these traditional, egalitarian governance systems, which enable the Oromos and the Sidamas look into issues in a civilised way that is diametrically opposed to the barbaric manner that characterizes the acts of the Abyssinian rulers!

3. Request from all the oppressed nations of the colonian Abyssinian empire that have shared this tragically shameful, 21st century slavery to stand up against the barbaric Abyssinian rulers who try to dilute amd melt down the distinct identities of all the nations of the colonial empire!

4. We strongly recommend all the oppressed nations to realize that this time is a great historical juncture hastening the down-fall of century-old and increasingly shaken Abyssinian regime. Consequently, our historical need to exert our consorted efforts in the struggle for the Independence of our Nations can´t wait for a time and opportunity better than this. Therefore, we urge you all to facilitate the failure of the Abyssinian regime without any delay!

5. We also urge western powerful nations that fund the misery of Ethiopian nations under Meles Zenawi´s despotic regime to re-think their approach; we strongly recommend them to come to support the genuine African democratic movements, including the liberation movements of the Oromos, the Sidamas, the Somalis, and all the other subjugated nations who suffering from starvation and abject poverty, being the undeserved victims of rampant Human Rights abuses.

Liberation and Victory to all Nations under Abyssinians occupation!!

Second Opposition Faction Preparing Boycott of Ethiopia Vote

The biggest opposition party that participated in Ethiopia’s nationwide elections Sunday is planning to boycott the second part of the voting, charging the first half was rigged. Another, larger opposition group had pulled out even before the first vote. VOA’s Peter Heinlein in Addis Ababa reports the withdrawal of the two largest opposition factions would clear the way for Ethiopia’s ruling party to take control of local councils nationwide, and to increase its majority in parliament.

The leadership of the Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement voted Monday to join a boycott when Ethiopia votes in critical municipal elections next Sunday.

The OFDM had been the largest opposition party participating last Sunday, as Ethiopians voted for the first time since 2005, when post-election protests turned deadly. Two hundred people were killed in the violence, and thousands were jailed, including most opposition leaders.

OFDM leader Bulcha Demeksa says his party had decided not to join the boycott for the first part of the vote.

But Monday, he accused election officials and the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front of massive intimidation and rigging, and said his party would join the boycott.

“We went in for the sake of peace and stability in our country,” said Bulcha Demeksa. “We did not want to be the cause of any crisis. But when the government shows no willingness to cooperate, and wants to be the only party which governs ethiopia, then we have no hope. We cannot work with this kind of party. We have to quit and show the world we are not able to work with them.”

Bulcha says preliminary results indicate his party did not win a single race Sunday in which it entered a candidate. Official results were not immediately available, but reports from political leaders indicate the ruling EPRDF and its allies won huge majorities.

Bulcha told VOA his party was not just defeated, but obliterated. He says as a result, he may be silenced in parliament because he no longer commands the minimum ten seats necessary to be considered a party.

He accused the EPRDF of using the elections as a means of instituting one-party rule in Ethiopia.

“This is happening because the EPRDF wants to be the only party ruling Ethiopia,” said Bulcha. “We’ve heard it. They’ve said they believe in the so-called dominant party. They want through semi-legal means to eliminate all the political parties in Ethiopia and remain the only political party that keeps power in Ethiopia.”

National Election Board office chief Tesfaye Mengesha told VOA Monday that Sunday’s turnout compared well with the 2005 vote. He said 24 million had cast ballots. It is not clear what percentage of the voting age population that represents, because there is no current census information available for Ethiopia, but the total voting age population is estimated to be roughly 40 million.

VOA reporters found polling stations nearly empty for the most part, but election board official Tesfaye attributed that to the addition of thousands of new locations that made voting faster.

The Chief of the Political Bureau of the EPRDF, Bereket Simon, on Monday expressed general satisfaction with the election. He declined further comment until results are announced. Asked when results could be expected, he quipped, “it will be quicker than in Zimbabwe.”

Earlier, Bereket denied there had been any intimidation or vote-rigging. He said the election board had investigated opposition complaints and found them to be without merit.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s EPRDF is almost certain to sweep next Sunday’s elections, too. The party fielded nearly four million candidates for about 3.8 million positions being contested. The 32 opposition parties combined were able to register only a few thousand candidates. Opposition leaders complained in advance that as many as 98 percent of their prospective candidates had been rejected by election officials.

Twin Blasts Rock Ethiopian Capital, Killing Three

Heinlein report - Listen (MP3) audio clip

Two bomb blasts in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa have killed three people and injured 18 others. VOA's Peter Heinlein in Addis Ababa reports the attacks targeted Ethiopia's national oil company.

The blasts occurred within an hour of each other late Monday at two gas stations operated by the privately-owned National Oil Company in different parts of the Ethiopian capital. In each case, police say an explosive device was planted near a kerosene dispenser.

Among the dead was a 10-year-old girl.

Police immediately sealed off the areas around the blast sites, but witnesses say both explosions caused considerable damage.

An Information Ministry spokesman would not rule out terrorism, but said no one claimed responsibility and no suspects were identified.

Addis Ababa has been the scene of two other bomb blasts in recent weeks, one outside Ethiopia's Commercial Bank and the other near the entrance to the high court

National Oil Company Chief Executive Officer Tadesse Tilahun says the two stations were back in operation Tuesday. He told VOA he is puzzled that oil installations were targeted.

"It has never happened like that in our stations," Tilahun said. "This is the first time, and I cannot tell because we here as a company are doing what is really good for the society at large, and that is our job, and I do not know anything negative from what we are doing to the public."

The semi-private National Oil Company operates 20 gasoline stations in Addis Ababa and about 80 throughout Ethiopia.

State-run Ethiopian television, in its report on the blasts, noted they came a day after the first phase of nationwide local and parliamentary elections. The reports speculated that the explosions could be the work of disgruntled opposition political factions.

A second phase of the elections will be held next Sunday, with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front expected to win by a landslide. Opposition parties have alleged massive fraud, and say a ruling party sweep would clear the way for one-party rule in Ethiopia.

Officials of the prime minister's party have rejected the charges, arguing that opposition parties, many of them small regional groups, were ill-equipped and poorly prepared for the nationwide municipal council elections.

Eritrea doesn't want UN troops on border-envoy

By Louis Charbonneau

UNITED NATIONS, April 10 (Reuters) - Eritrea's U.N. envoy said on Thursday he saw no need for U.N. peacekeepers to remain on its border with Ethiopia, despite U.N. fears that a total withdrawal could spark a new war in the Horn of Africa.

"We don't need UNMEE anymore," Eritrean Ambassador Araya Desta told Reuters in a telephone interview. He was referring to the U.N. mission on the Ethiopian-Eritrean border.

"The UNMEE issue is a dead issue," he said.

Responding to fears of a repeat of the two countries' 1998-2000 war, Desta said Eritrea was not planning to attack Ethiopia. But he warned Addis Ababa that his country was prepared to fend off any invasions into Eritrean territory.

"If the Ethiopians invade us, we'll be forced to defend ourselves," Desta said.

UNMEE has already withdrawn nearly 1,700 troops and military observers who for the past seven years had been trying to prevent another war between the Horn of Africa neighbors.

Some 164 peacekeepers are left in Eritrea to guard equipment, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a new report circulated to the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday.

The 1,700 peacekeepers had been stationed in a 15.5-mile (25-km) buffer zone inside Eritrea. But Asmara turned against UNMEE because of U.N. inability to enforce rulings by an independent commission awarding chunks of Ethiopian-held territory, including the town of Badme, to Eritrea.

UNMEE pulled most of its troops out of Eritrea after the government cut off access to fuel and restricted deliveries of food and other essential supplies. Asmara denies this and accuses UNMEE of enabling Ethiopia to occupy its territory. that a total withdrawal of UNMEE could lead to a new war.

Most UNMEE troops have been sent home temporarily, Ban said in the report, obtained by Reuters.

There are also still a few peacekeepers on the Ethiopian side of the border, though Addis Ababa had indicated that it does not want to be alone in hosting U.N. troops.

Ban's report said Eritrea was refusing to discuss the issue of the future status of UNMEE and accused Asmara of a "military occupation" of the official buffer zone between the countries established under the cease-fire agreement.

Desta said his government had not prepared an official response to the report but he vehemently denied that Eritrean forces had illegally seized the territory, which he said was land that belonged to Eritrea. (Editing by Cynthia Osterman)

Oromo...March on Washington was a success

On March 31, 2008, members of International Oromo Youth Association once again marched to the capital to remind the US government, the international community and the American media to give the necessary and long over due attention to the turmoil occurring in the horn of Africa. The International Oromo Youth Association (IOYA), an umbrella organization of all Oromo Youth Associations and Student Unions across the globe, with a vision of engaging in a multifaceted struggle to bring freedom and justice to the Oromo people, pledges to come back year after year, to March on Washington, until freedom and social justice is a reality in the horn of Africa.
Since the current minority regime of Ethiopia clinched to power in 1992, the Oromo nation has seen the largest exodus in its recorded history. Whereas almost everyone was affected by the act of ethnic cleansing theatrical staged by Ethiopia’s government, many left the country to save their lives. Hundreds of thousands are living a nightmarish life in fear of forced deportation, killing and arrest in neighboring countries.
Over the last couple of years, the Ethiopian government had systematically planned to cut short the ongoing Oromo struggle for self-determination. To effectively carry out this tactical goal; it went to war with Somalia, went across border to Kenya to kidnap and kill Oromo refugees and pressed the Sudanese government to deport Oromo refugees. Since the Ethiopian government invaded sovereign territories of Somalia, an unaccounted number of Oromo refugees were taken as prisoners; others were murdered in a cold-blood. In a more recent incident more than 100 Oromos were burned down with their houses in Somalia’s city of Bosassoo.
Our mission is to be the voice for the voiceless majority in Ethiopia. Huluka Abebe, one of the organizers from Georgia State University said “rain didn’t stop us… the cold weather didn’t stop us…we will continue to burn the candle until it gives us some light”. Other enthusiastic members of International Oromo Youth Association, a non-profit youth organization based in Minnesota share Mr.Abebe’s views.
The youth came from as far as Australia, United Kingdom and Canada. Within the U.S; Oromo youth drove in sheer numbers to attend the rally from Minnesota, Atlanta, Tennessee, California and neighboring states of Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York. The Organizes estimate that about 400 people attended the rally, citing bad weather as a reason for the low turn-out. Kitesso Chiri, IOYA board member from Minnesota says “we had many things working against us, yet we have done what we have to do, no matter how little change this might bring, our members were dedicated enough to come out and say nothing can stop us”.
IOYA is determined to continue advocating and telling the stories of those who are kept in darkness. We want to affirm our commitment to organizing similar marches for peace and justice for Oromo people. We call on all Oromos, friends of Oromo, and all peace-loving people to join us on our next rally which will be held during the last week of July, in Minnesota. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all who participated in the rally. We also thank all organizations and individuals who supported the efforts in making this rally a success.

Mine blast kills 10 Ethiopian troops

At least 10 Ethiopian soldiers have been killed and 13 others injured in a landmine explosion in south of the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The Ethiopian troops were killed when their vehicle hit a landmine in Waaberi district on Wednesday, a Press TV correspondent reported from Mogadishu. Several civilians were also injured in the attack, witnesses said. Another roadside bomb, targeting Ugandan peace keepers went off near Adan Adde international airport in southern Mogadishu, but there were no immediate reports on the number of casualties, witnesses said. The streets of Mogadishu are the scene of daily clashes between Insurgents and Ethiopian troops, Somalia government forces and African Union peacekeepers. Somalia has been plagued by almost uninterrupted civil unrest since the 1991 ouster of former president Mohamed Siad Barre. HE/MMN

Land clashes kill 18 in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Clashes over grazing and farm land killed 18 people last week near the southern Ethiopian town of Wondo-Genet, police said.
A police commander told Reuters the fighting on April 3 pitted members of the Gugi Oromo and Sidama clans, some 260 km (160 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa.
"Clashes between the two clans have been brought under control and the government is investigating their cause," Demsash Hailu, public relations head of the Federal Police, said late on Tuesday.
Fighting between the two clans in the region, which is known for its hot springs and lush forests, flare up sporadically.
They normally centre on disputes over land used for grazing and for growing khat, a narcotic plant that is one of Ethiopia's main exports and chewed across east Africa and the Middle East.

The Ethiopian Mafia Masterminded the gold scam

Nairobi (HAN) April 6th, 2008- The Ethiopian Mafia and the Bankers who masterminded the recent gold fraud at the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) have left the country before police started to arrest suspects.
Reliable sources told The Reporter that the individual who first started to supply gold plated steel to the NBE was Asmare Ayalew. In 2005 Asmare’s close friend called Samson went to NBE with a forged gold export license named Kefeyalew Umeta Export. Samson, who used the fake identity, Ketyalew Umeta, as his name previously served in the Addis Ababa police commission with the rank of sergeant.

Samson (Kefyalew Umeta) gave a power of attorney to Asmare, which enabled Asmare to supply gold to NBE on behalf of Kefyalew Umeta and to receive payments. According to information obtained from NBE in 2006, Kefyalew Umeta supplied 239.36748 kg of gold with a total value of 35,924,502.59 birr.

From July to December 2007 Kefyalew supplied 222.9623 kg of "gold" valued at 35,974,160.34 birr. Sorces told The Reporter that Asmare was supplying the product to NBE on behalf of Kefyalew Umeta and the payment was transferred to Asmare’s bank account in the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE). Sources said Asmare supplied the product to the NBE by bypassing the Ethiopian Geological Survey’s Central Geo-Chemical Laboratory which is supposed to inspect the gold. Asmare and Sason had wooden boxes which NBE gives to gold exporters.

They also had forged seal of the Ethiopian Geological Survey. According to information obtained from NBE, Kefyalew Umeta Export supplied 529 kg of "gold", which only 30 kg was real gold. In 2005, the laboratory inspected 30 kg of gold brought by Kefyalew Umeta Export. The laboratory also inspected eight gm of real gold brought by Kefyalew but it was not supplied to NBE after the inspection.

According to sources, at least 200 million birr payment was transferred from NBE to Asmare’s account in CBE. Sources said Samson (Kefyalew Umeta) and Asmare left the country in September 2007. Sources added that Asmare now resides in the US while Samson is in Australia. Asmare helped other individuals who collaborated with him to get out of the country.

Asmare got an investment license to establish a big construction company here in Ethiopia which he used to legally send the money out of the country. Sources said Asmare opened a letter of credit at CBE claiming that he wanted to purchase heavy duty construction machineries from the US. The money was wired to a construction machinery manufacturing company in the US through City Bank. However, after Asmare went to the US he took the money from the company saying he had changed his mind. Asmare and Samson took their families with them.

The Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission’s Prosecutor is expected to file charges against 26 suspects who are under custody accused of an alleged involvement in the gold fraud on the coming Monday. Sorces said some of the business people under custody learnt about the fraud from Asmare and Samson.

When the commission took the case to the Federal High Court the file was called under the file of Kefyalew Umeta. However, now the file is called under the file of Mudesir Mohammed. Mudesir, owner of Sofam Enterprise, is in custody together with his four brothers and one nephew. Four individuals from the Ethiopian Geological Survey, seven from NBE and 15 businesspeople and other individuals. According to the Federal Auditor General report, the NBE has lost 158 million birr. However, sources said Samson and Asmare defrauded the bank of over 200 million birr and this one was not included in the report. The court case is adjourned for April 7.

Dozens flee Ethiopian army in Somalia

Ethiopian army has launched a house-to-house search after more than 57 servicemen deserted army in Mogadishu, fleeing to nearby regions.

Military sources in Somalia said a massive manhunt has been launched to spot the defectors in a region about 30 km (20 miles) northwest of Mogadishu since Thursday, a Press TV correspondence reported on Friday.

Last year, more than a hundred Ethiopian soldiers left duty and fled Mogadishu, seeking asylum in Yemen, but eventually they were handed over to Ethiopians by Yemeni officials.

Daily desertion by both Somali and Ethiopian soldiers is increasing, as more army officers resign from their posts, saying that they are not able to continue cooperation with the ruling government.

Meanwhile, Somalia opposition Islamic Courts Union (ICU) and al-Shabab fighters have vowed to continue the fight against the Somali ruling government.

Elsewhere in north of Mogadishu, one woman was killed and three others were seriously injured after a man lobbed a grenade at a group of civilians in a street in Shiibis region.

OLF and Oromos demand Western disapproval of the Abysso-Nazi Tyrant Zenawi

Dr. Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis

A while back, the regular meeting of the National Council of the Oromo Liberation Front was held, March 16 to 21; after the deliberations ended, several resolutions have been adopted, and a press release was issued on March 21.

The OLF leaders, as the main national Oromo force, denounced the tribal tyranny imposed on all the subjugated nations of Abyssinia by the Amhara and Tigray administration and the Tigray political party TPLF that served as vehicle for the Tigray rise in power.

Describing the only surviving colonial regime in Africa – which through all its political metamorphoses (monarchical, communist and pseudo-republican) contributed to the incarceration and tyranny of various other nations beyond the Oromos – as perpetrator of "heinous atrocities", the Oromo leaders successfully depicted the portentous and antihuman of the Abyssinian regime.

The OLF leaders called the Oromo nation, which makes up to 40% of Abyssinia´s population, to "continue its defiance of the tyranny of the TPLF regime". The call marks a staunch support for Oromo freedom and national liberation, as it comes in total opposition to marginalized cases of wilted Oromo renegades prone to set up an alliance with the Abyssinian criminals and launch a ludicrous alternative Abyssinian (named ´Ethiopian´) regime masterminded by the disreputable and illegitimate interlocutors of Ass. Secretary Jendayi Frazer.

Categorically denouncing the ´Ethiopian´ involvement in Somalia and the Anti-Eritrean animosity of the Zenawi regime, the OLF leaders held ´Ethiopia´ as the basic factor of destabilization of the Horn of Africa region. They called therefore upon the Western countries´ commitment to Human Rights, Democracy and Justice, demanding the immediate denunciation, containment and intimidation of the heinous, racist, and murderous Abyssinian regime.

The OLF press release heralds bright days for the Oromos and the other oppressed and massacred nations of ´Ethiopia´; we publish it here integrally as it consists in a further nail in the coffin of the racist, colonial and inhuman regime of ´Ethiopia´.

Resolutions of the OLF´s 3rd National Council Meeting

The National Council of Oromo Liberation Front has successfully completed its regular meeting that was held from March 16 to 21, 2008. During its meeting the National Council extensively deliberated, among others, on important issues relevant to the Organization, the Oromo people, the Ethiopian Government and the Horn of Africa and passed the below resolutions.

In its three decades long history, the Oromo Liberation Front has passed through ups and downs and it is continuing to rally the Oromo people in its struggle. The fundamental political objectives of the OLF, the realization of the Oromo People´s inalienable rights to self-determination, are intact. These fundamental objectives of the OLF are supported by millions of Oromos. In order to soon realize the fundamental objectives of the OLF, the Council has directed its Executive Committee to organize and conduct multifaceted struggle.

To thwart the Oromo people´s support for the OLF, the TPLF regime/the Ethiopian Government has engaged in unparalleled suppression of the Oromo people. The heinous atrocities the TPLF regime is perpetrating on the Oromo people is intensifying. Even the Oromo refugees who fled the country due to persecution and fear of persecution by the regime are not safe from the inhuman and cruel atrocities that TPLF regimes unleashed on the Oromo people. The recent mass killing/massacre of the Oromo refugees in Bosasso, Somalia, perpetrated by the TPLF regime´s forces is another evidence of the inhuman and cruel atrocities that the TPLF regime is perpetrating on the Oromo people inside and outside the country. The National Council of the Oromo Liberation Front again vigorously condemns the TPLF regime´s cruel and inhuman action taken against the Oromo refugees in Bosasso.
The National Council noted and appreciated the Oromo people´s support for the OLF that is unabated in spite of the TPLF regime´s arbitrary arrests, wanton and extra-judicial killings, dispossessions and other appalling human rights violations. The National Council again calls upon the Oromo people to continue its defiance of the tyranny of the TPLF regime, to foil the regime´s divide and rule tactics/ schemes and to double its just struggle until its legitimate aspirations for liberation, human rights and democracy are achieved.

There is no form of suppression and atrocity that the minority based TPLF regime did not and will not commit to perpetrate its tyrannical rule. The atrocities that the TPLF regime is committing against the people are evidence that substantiates the TPLF regimes unwillingness to peacefully and democratically address the peoples´ political questions for liberation and democracy. As a result, the TPLF regime, in contravention of its own constitution, international laws and norms, is escalating the suppression of and atrocities against the peoples of the country. It is also continuing its interference in the internal affairs of the neighbouring countries. The TPLF regime is an anti-peace and anti-stability force in the Horn of Africa. The Council, therefore, reminds and warns that the TPLF regime that it shall be responsible for the consequences of the tensions and worrisome situation that is prevailing the Horn of Africa.

It is to be recalled that the TPLF regime has repeatedly pledged to the peoples of the country and the international community that it is committed to bring democracy, peace and development to Ethiopia. Nevertheless, the hitherto process and records of the TPLF regime show that the regime conducts sham and rigged periodic elections for the sake of "legitimizing" its tyrannical rule. The truth the regimes´ records show beyond doubt is the TPLF regime lacks the political will and capacity to organize free and fair elections and to accept the verdict of the people. We, therefore, call up on all political forces that are struggling for liberation and democracy to pull our forces and resources together and remove from power the anti-people, anti-democracy and anti-peace regime of the TPLF and pave the way for liberation, democracy, peace and development.

The gross human rights violations it has engaged in, the economic exploitation and dispossession of the people it has embarked up on, its sinister acts of divide and rule and the acts pitting and inciting people of the country against one another and the wanton interference in the internal affairs, the aggression and occupation of neighbouring countries unmistakably demonstrate that the TPLF regime is an anti-peace force that is destabilizing the Horn of Africa. In a total disregard to the TPLF tyrannical regimes´ glaring bad human rights records and shameful and irresponsible behaviour, the Western Countries´ continued their economic, political, diplomatic and military support to the regime. The Western Countries´ support to the TPLF regime is not only saddening; it also contravenes their publicly known policies and stated declarations. Therefore, the OLF National Council calls up on Western Countries to review and reconsider their policies towards the tyrannical TPLF regime and stand with the OLF and other forces of liberation, democracy, justice, peace and progress.

Victory to the Oromo People!

National Council of the OLF

Somali insurgents kill 26 Ethiopians

Sat, 22 Mar 2008 22:36:28
Ethiopian military forces patrol Somalia's capital, Mogadishu
Insurgents launch a string of attacks on Ethiopian soldiers in Mogadishu, killing over 26 of the foreign forces trapped in mine fields.

A blast, the second such attack in almost 12 hours, hit an Ethiopian military convoy near Garas Baley in the south of Somalia's troubled capital.

The insurgents attack on three vehicles of Ethiopian forces left at least 26 dead and 38 more injured, Press TV correspondent in Somalia reported.

Following the severe explosion of one of the vehicles, the street was flooded with Ethiopian soldiers who checked civilian movements in the area.

Eyewitnesses said the Ethiopians enraged by the assault opened fire on a Somali military vehicle and killed four government soldiers.

In a separate land mine incident on Saturday some 12 Somali government troops were killed and 20 foreign soldiers were injured in Mogadishu.

Meanwhile, the road linking the capital and the town of Afgoye in its outskirts is riddled with land mines, planted in every 50 steps, with their remote controls in hands of Somali insurgents who are hunting Ethiopian convoys.

Ethiopia faces food crisis as drought worsens

By ARGAW ASHINE, NATION Correspondent
Last updated: Tue, Mar 18, 2008 23:04 PM (EAT)

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA, Tuesday

Many parts of eastern and southern Ethiopia are experiencing severe drought after the rains failed last year

One of the worst hit regions is Borana, some 650 kilometres south of Addis Ababa in Oromia state, which neighbours Kenya.

“Six people have died in Dire and Moyale districts. We are now struggling to deliver food and medical supplies,” the Borana region’s administrator, Abdulkadir Abdi, told journalists visiting the area. Three children and two adults have died in Liben and Guji districts in the region’s east and north respectively.

Hospital sources confirmed that the deaths were related to hunger and lack of clean water.

Chala Wordofa, the head of Oromia’s Disaster Prevention and Control office, acknowledged that parts of the region have had a long dry season, but added that the authorities are keenly monitoring the situation.

“At the moment there is no immediate threat, but things could get out of control if sufficient quantities of food and water are not delivered on time,” he said.

However, speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Ethiopian Prime Minster Meles Zenawi downplayed the situation in Borana, saying it was simply due to “failure of the mid-year (meher) rains and will not affect our speedy economic growth”.

Mr Zenawi dismissed the reports of human and livestock deaths during his briefing to parliament on national economic issues, but opposition MPs said the situation was critical and called for urgent government action.

According to a report by humanitarian agencies, about 8 million people in Ethiopia require food aid, 1 million of them urgently.

Ironically, Ethiopia is facing a food crisis when crop production has risen by 45 per cent in the past five years.

UN and international agencies working on the ground refused to quoted by the media unless the information was confirmed by Ethiopian government officials.

“We know how the situation is worsening but the Ethiopian government is sensitive to a single press statement,” a senior UN official in Addis Ababa said.

However, a UN assessment report indicates that 29 schools have been forced to close and more than 4,000 children have dropped out of school in Borana district due to severe climatic conditions and migration by the local pastoral community.

Terminated Yugoslavia – Exploding ´Ethiopia´

Dr. Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis
In an earlier article entitled ´Ogaden – the African Kosovo ready for Independence´, we made a parallel between the recently proclaimed as independent Balkan state and the long persecuted Ogaden, the Western part of Somalia that was illegally transferred (by the departing British colonials) to the barbaric and murderous Amhara pseudo-king Haile Selassie of Abyssinia.

In fact, the parallel between Kosova and Ogaden imposes a complete change of the US African policy and an American U-turn in favour of Somalia, Ogaden, Eritrea, and the numerous tyrannized nations of Abyssinia, fallaciously re-baptized as ´Ethiopia´.

Yugoslavia and 'Ethiopia': two countries of colonial nature

The analogy between Kosova 1998 and Ogaden 2008 was actually heralded by the resemblance between Yugoslavia and Ethiopia. A closer study of the two colonial relics reveals the greatest parallel that can be drawn between Europe and Africa: Yugoslavia and 'Ethiopia'.

Yugoslavia was established through wars (Balkan wars, WW I), and shameful treaties that disregarded the will and the aspirations of numerous nations that unwillingly became slaves of the disproportionately and unjustly expanded tiny Serbian kingdom.

One must have a clear understanding of the historical developments that between 1912 and 1919 transformed the daily life of numerous Balkan nations into a nightmare within the huge tyranny that a few years later was renamed as "Kingdom of Yugoslavia". Certainly, there were expansionist dreams of the nationalist and chauvinist Serbs, who harbored the criminal idea of the re-establishment of their medieval kingdom, which was just an ephemeral development in the History of the Balkans.

Anglo-French colonial interests behind the criminal Serb and Abyssinian tyrants

However, the main force that contributed to these abnormal developments in the Balkans was the colonial interest of France and England, which was prejudicial to the existence of the Ottoman Empire and Austria – Hungary. The two countries had to be unjustly and undeservedly decomposed so that territories inhabited by Slovenes, Croats, Hungarians, Romanians and Bosnians (belonging to Austria – Hungary) and populated by Albanians and Macedonians (belonging to the Ottoman Empire), and Montenegrins become parts of the crazily inflated kingdom of Serbia.

With their support of the anti-democratic, murderous, and inhuman developments, the colonial powers attempted also to disentangle Serbia from Russia, and to limit German interests in the Balkans, which they also achieved.

Similarly, Abyssinia was established through ceaseless wars undertaken by the barbaric Amhara and Tigray Abyssinians who proved to be an alien element in Africa, as they were never in good terms with any African nation, either Kushitic, Nilo-Saharan or Bantu. These wars lasted almost 100 years, and the illiterate, treacherous and cruel pseudo-kings of the tiny Abyssinian kingdom did not respect any early treaties they had signed; contrarily, they were very subservient to their lords, the British and the French colonials who mobilized the barbaric and isolated mountainous kings in order to contain the Italian expansion in Eastern Africa.

Abyssinia: the Anti-Christian country par excellence

In fact, the tiny Abyssinian monarchy was the weakling of the mountains and the monster of the monasteries. As a heretic and mostly idolatrous vulgarization of Christianity has been the local dogma, the behind-the-scenes-ruling heretic, pseudo-Christian monks (the notorious ´debteras´) repeatedly gave orders and bore responsibility for the assassination of Catholic and protestant missionaries and priests who happened to cross their – definitely unholy – territory around Lake Tana.

The British colonials selected them as ally precisely because the Anti-Christian kingdom of Abyssinia could be a volunteer against Christian Italy and the Vatican. The last gift the British offered to their colonial subservient instruments, the Haile Selassie tyrannical administration, was Ogaden.

In the same way the Anglo-French colonials supported the Serbs at the detriment of the Slovenes, the Croats, the Hungarians, the Romanians, the Bosnians, the Albanians and the Macedonians (who were the main ethnic groups living in areas unjustly attributed to Serbia), the same criminal colonials helped make of the tiny, poor, miserable and Anti-Christian kingdom of Abyssinia an Eastern African colonial power at the prejudice of the Oromo Ethiopians, the Ogadeni Somalis, the Afars, the Sidamas, the Anuaks, the Shekachos, the Kaffas, the Agaws, the Kambatas, the Wolayitas and other mercilessly tyrannized African nations – that have nothing in common with the essentially un-African Abyssinians.

Colonial expansion in figures

In the same way the small Serbian kingdom´s surface was smaller than 40000 km2, but the colonial fabrication ´Yugoslavia´ covered a sizeable territory of 248000 km2, the Abyssinian kingdom did not control an area larger than 80000 km2 in the first half of the 19th century, but after the Abyssinian colonial expansion (1955) its surface totaled more than 1.2 million m2.

Ethnic, linguistic, religious and cultural oppression ran high in either cases; in Yugoslavia, Slovenes and Croats were Catholic, Bosnians and Albanians were Muslim, Macedonians were Orthodox but aspired to (until they achieved in 1968) autocephaly, and Montenegrins had a centuries long tradition of independence and particular localism.

The Hell of colonial Abyssinia (fake 'Ethiopia')

In the colonial Hell named 'kingdom of Abyssinia', Afars and Ogadeni Somalis were Muslims, whereas Oromos were either Muslims or followers of the traditional Oromo monotheistic and aniconic religion, Waqqefanna, and some of them accepted Christianity because of the efforts of various missionaries from the West. All the other nations, the Anuaks, the Shekachos, the Kaffas, the Sidamas, the Kambatas and the Wolayitas had their own religions, and some of them accepted Western Christianity through the work of various missionaries (as in the case of the Oromos).

In Abyssinia, there is an additional dimension; the religious oppression exercised within the context of the same nation, namely the discrimination extensively practiced against the Amhara and Tigray Muslims.

False names to cover the tyranny, the racism, and the hatred

Serbia has to be re-baptized as Yugoslavia in order to justify the Serbian political supremacy over all the non-Serb populations of that colonial state. Similarly, Abyssinia has been renamed as ´Ethiopia´, as the barbaric pseudo-king Haile Selassie followed Anglo-French instructions that were geared for mainly two reasons, namely

1) to keep Sudan detached from its non-Arabic, Kushitic ("Ethiopian") historical background (part of the Pan-Arabic plan of the Anglo-French colonials), and

2) to justify the criminal rule of the Semitic Abyssinian minority over the Ethiopian Kushitic and Nilo-Saharan majority within the colonially expanded Abyssinia.

Both countries turned from heinous, anachronistic and perilous kingdoms to dictatorial communist establishments, and then to totalitarian, nationalistic, pseudo-republican realms of the utmost inhumanity and criminality.

The End of Yugoslavia

Europe and America could not long tolerate the propagandist of the Pan-Serbian Hatred, the merciless dictator Milosevic. Mostly through painful experience and traumatic wars, Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosova seceded and became independent. Happily enough, Slovenia, Macedonia, and Montenegro gained their independence without war. The incredible nightmare ´Yugoslavia´ has almost been terminated by now. What is left is that the Muslims of Sanjak, and the Hungarians and the Romanians of Voivodina achieve their long demanded secession from Serbia, and engage themselves in democracy and socioeconomic progress.

Ogaden brings about the Death of fake 'Ethiopia'

As Yugoslavia is about to expire, fake ´Ethiopia´ is about to explode. Ogaden will secede first, and merge with Somalia where the days of the racist Abyssinian thugs (fallaciously called as soldiers by the irresponsible Jendayi Frazer) are numbered.

The Afar Republic, and the Sidama - Southern Confederation

Then the Oromos, the Afars, and the Southerners will demand their freedom, independence and national dignity. An Afar Republic in the North would merge with Djibouti, whereas in the South and the West, the Sidamas, the Shekachos, the Kaffas, the Kambatas, the Wolayitas and the Anuaks could establish a loose confederation, and the focus separately on cultural – educational development and collectively on socio-economic progress.

The Oromo Republic of Ethiopia

An independent Oromo Republic would demand for all correct historical reasons the exclusive use of the national name of Ethiopia.

The Tigray Republic of Abyssinia

Then the tyrannical elites of the Amhara and Tigray will find no colonized lands and subjugated nations to exploit and will fight among themselves for their only true national name that they so much pretend to dislike now: Abyssinia.

It would also be an aberration, as the custodians of the Axumite Abyssinian Heritage are undisputedly the Tigrays.

Amhara and Serbs: losers will always be the Racists

Isolated between Gonder and Bahar Dar, the Amharas will soon find themselves in the certainly unpleasant position the Serbs find themselves today; simply they will be the only responsible for the curse that will be soon befallen upon them.

And they will not avoid it whatever support they may provisorily get from people of the sort of Jendayi Frazer who under normal democratic procedures in America will be unavoidably impeached.

The dismemberment of fake ´Ethiopia´ could be much faster than the decomposition of Yugoslavia, so much rejected by all the oppressed nations the Abyssinians are.

Jendayi Frazer: unable to save tyrant Zenawi and the Neo-Nazi Party Kinijit

Explosions will be soon the daily rhythm in the country that ridiculously Ass. Secretary Jendayi Frazer dares describe as US ally. It would therefore be very significant to republish here at the end of this article the news earlier spread through Reuters.

The disintegration of Abyssinia will be the subject of several forthcoming articles, but the news about explosions will be more numerous; we will have the opportunity to analyze why the US must contribute immediately to the Death of ´Ethiopia´; if the present administration does not act fast an ´Afghanistan on the African plateau´ will soon be a reality.

Eight killed in Ethiopia blast blamed on Eritrea - police

http://africa.reuters.com/top/news/usnBAN425102.html

Addis Ababa (Reuters) - An explosion on a bus in northern Ethiopia killed eight people and wounded 27 on Thursday, a police official said, blaming the attack on agents from Ethiopia's arch-foe Eritrea.

A federal police commander, Demash Hailu, said the bus had been travelling between the towns of Humera and Shire in the north's Tigray region.

"Investigations have shown that the bomb was planted by Eritrean agents," Demash told Reuters, without giving further details.

Ethiopia has often accused Eritrea of being behind blasts on its territory.

Demash also said "many" young Eritreans, including soldiers had crossed into Ethiopia in recent days -- without giving more information.

The two Horn of Africa neighbours, which fought each other in a two-year war ending in 2000, are locked in a bitter impasse over their 1,000 km (620 mile) border.

Oromo and Gambella regions need food aid in '08

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Nearly 9 million people in Ethiopia's pastoral regions will need food aid this year despite a projected bumper harvest for 2007/08, a U.S.-funded research group said on Tuesday.

"About eight million chronically food insecure people and an additional 952,503 acutely food insecure people in Ethiopia will require food or cash assistance in 2008," said the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS Net) in a report.

Ethiopia says it expects an overall harvest of 16.5 million tonnes in the current 2007/08 season on good weather and better planting.

The group -- funded by the aid wing of the U.S. government -- said pastoralists in Ethiopia's Somali, Oromo and Gambella regions were the worst hit.

The United Nations said earlier this month that more than one million people were suffering from drought in Ethiopia's Somali and Borena regions.

The network's report said livestock prices and demand have declined especially for goats and cattle. Livestock exports are a key source of hard currency for the Horn of Africa nation.
