Mr. Dirribi Bokku is the incumbent president of the oldest Oromo civil society organization (CSO) known as Macha and Tulama Association (MTA) in Ethiopia. MTA´s office is based in Finfinnee, Addis Ababa. Dirribi also worked for the Ethiopian Airlines for many years before he was imprisoned in the year 2004 and sacked in the last quarter of 2007. Bokku is also the author of a new Oromo book "Ilaalcha Oromoo" (Oromo View), which is a guide to the traditional African Oromo religion "Waaqeffannaa". He is a prominent local NGO leader in Ethiopia.

I went very attentively through Mr. Abdulkadir Gumi´s article ´Oromos: unblessed with leaders´ and I do find it as an excellent opportunity to exchange with my friend some ideas and approaches in public. I know Mr. Abdulkadir Gumi personally, and I have come to appreciate (and benefit from) his strong Oromo culture, his political resoluteness, and his commitment to the Oromo Cause. Abdulkadir is a young Borana Oromo political activist, who deserves great respect for the help he has offered to many Oromo refugees, penniless refugees, and undeservedly imprisoned asylum seekers.

In an opinion editorial published yesterday in many websites, Mr. Abdulkadir Gumi asserted that the Oromo Nation has currently no great caliber political leaders able to "rise above their village, clans, interest". Little matters whether I agree with the statement or not. Abdulkadir may be right in his comparisons with examples of African leaders, but I would like to pinpoint some yet unnoticed truths. At the end of this article, I republish Mr. Abdulkadir Gumi´s editorial which was the occasion for me to put together the following points.

In this article, I will accomplish one simple task of showing how political organizations which prefix the words "Ethiopia´´ and "Unity" to their names engage in conspiracy and counter- conspiracy campaigns against others who do not have those prefixes. This is the anti-thesis of their ostensible goals of bringing about unity, democracy and justice in Ethiopia. It is worthwhile to do so because these political organizations are spreading confusion and misinformation to the international community as well as to the nations and nationalities they claim to represent. These confusions and the divisions within Ethiopian political organizations have made it difficult to create a viable and genuine alliance between organizations representing different groups. It has also made it difficult for donors, the international community and continental supporters to rally behind these organizations.

Who are the organizations and how do they suffer from authenticity deficits?

Political organizations suffering from chronic authenticity and integrity deficits include the ruling Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Front (EPRDF), the defunct Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), the newly formed Andnet Unity for Democracy and Justice Party (UDJP). These organizations deliberately bear the prefixes "Ethiopia" and "Unity", with the intention of creating a misleading impression of how widely they embrace all the nations and nationalities in Ethiopia. Practically, they do not do that. They are divisive and they stand for partisan interests of Tigrayan and Amhara nationalists. For any insider, including the founders and members, it is obvious that these political organizations stand not for all the people in Ethiopia, but for the Abyssinian tribes.

EPRDF conspiracies against oppositions
At the nucleus of the EPRDF is the TPLF, which controls all branches of government in favor of Tigrayan nationals through its rubber-stamp parliament. The ruling party has conspired against major oppositions and has been able to infiltrate and destroy them. The CUD was destroyed in this way, for example. CUD was a strong Amhara political organization. It portrayed itself as ´the party of all Ethiopian peoples´ in the eyes of the international community before it was infiltrated and damaged. The ruling party forced major oppositions from Afar, Oromia, Somalia, Southern Nations and Nationalities Gambella, Benishangul Gumuz, demanding for freedom and autonomy into exile or into armed liberation fronts. The ongoing discussion among Oromos about their leadership´s possible perspectives and final choices has indeed only limited interest. Either a few Oromo renegades want to cooperate with the racist and criminal elements of Ginbot-7 and Kinijit or not, the choice will have little effect.

The provocative and dictatorial stance of Hitler´s Children in Africa, the gangsters of Ginbot-7 and Kinijit, against the liberation of the oppressed nations of the pseudo-state ´Ethiopia´ is also an insignificant issue.

What matters is that History has already issued its Verdict against this tragic-comical state with the false, usurped name ´Ethiopia´, which belongs to the ancestors of the modern Kushites who developed a millennia-long civilization in today´s Northern Sudan.

Oromo Struggle for National Independence and the Threat of Tribalism

In a previous article - Call for an All-Oromo Constituent Assembly, I referred to several critical problems that appeared in the daylight during the recent developments among the Oromo leadership. I expanded on the lack of willingness for Dialogue. In this article, I intend to focus on another – equally critical – problem.

Many widely endorsed Oromo intellectuals and academics attested a latent or blatant tribalism in the developments in question. Whether tribalism exists and shapes the Oromo political life or not is a matter of subjective judgment. By this I don´t want to deny the existence of the phenomenon, but I want simply to underscore the fact that every reference to tribalism is purely a matter of interpretation.

To some, one type of behaviour is an expression of tribalism; to others, it is not. When we limit the issue to the subject of the extent of the tribalism, for some, it is minimal, but others consider it as tremendous. How to deal with the phenomenon, and the possible interpretations of it, while keeping a close eye on forging a unitary, all-Oromo or pan-Oromo, approach? How to deal with an issue that for some may have gone unnoticed but others never dared admit its existence, although they knew about it?

To deal with the issue of tribalism in Oromo politics – either it exists or not – we must find another name for it, a descriptive formula that will help develop a serene approach to the overall subject.

Following the recent developments among the Oromo leadership, the context of the Oromo National Struggle for Independence got more confused and more disorientated. At the same time, it became far clearer.

I will start my approach with the latter; clearer? How?

This situation made clear that the Oromos simply cannot afford to continue multi-divided like that. This is the only way to guarantee that Oromia will never be free, and as consequence, the existence of the real Oromo Nation will be endangered by the false, forged concept of the – absolutely inexistent – ´Ethiopian´ pseudo-nation.

At the same time, many critical problems that are able to definitely prevent the Oromos from achieving their objectives came to surface. The nature of these problems is such that they contribute to multi-division, communication interruption, and mutual incomprehension – all constituting the principal hindrances in the path to Free and Independent Oromia. Ethiopians withdrawing from Mogadishu

Ethiopian troops are loading their heavy weaponry onto ships at Mogadishu port and will be heading toward Somaliland's Berbera port.

The Ethiopians are loading some 49 military tanks and 91 artillery carrier vehicles onto ships along with thousands of soldiers, a Press TV correspondent reported Sunday.

Also more than 5,000 Ethiopian soldiers have traveled on foot from Mogadishu to Afgoya on their way to Baidoa town, a senior Somali government official told Press TV on condition of anonymity. He described the move as 'a real surprise'.

Ethiopian forces kill Somali civilians, witnesses say

(CNN) -- Ethiopian forces in Somalia have killed at least 46 civilians after a roadside bomb ripped through their military convoy, residents said.

The violence happened Friday on the road linking Mogadishu to the agriculturally rich town of Afgooye, residents said.

The civilians were riding in two minibuses traveling on the same road, they said.

Ethiopia's 2010 election the root cause of the Split inside the OLF

The Oromo political patterns we have witnessed all along these past 17 years moved and approached issues from a day to day based reactions to only delineate the original objectives of the OLF. It is one thing to capitalize on an existing MISSION and use different strategies in-order to accomplish the task at hand but it is another matter to react to TPLF’s political dynamics only to be further confused by it. For sure, such an approach is what causes frustrations within the organization and that frustration is responsible for the conflicts we are witnessing.

HOW DOES ETHIOPIA’S POLITICAL DYNAMICS CAUSES A SPLIT INSIDE THE OLF?.

If we carefully examine the political dynamics of year 2005 Ethiopian election and analyze what happened inside the OLF, or even see Oromo Diaspora's behavior, we notice how new political components are entering Oromians political equation.

BUT WHY?

Here is the equation. If OLF’s goal is equals to LUST FOR POWER IN ETHIOPIA, then changes resulted inside the the OLF. That means, whenever the TPLF changes it’s political direction, it forces the OLF to alter it’s original political objective. And then, when alteration happens to the original objective of the OLF, opposition takes place and thus split takes it’s tall allowing the birth of new organizations. Not only that but the organization also loses it’s best members, dissatisfaction also increase weakening the organization. (The split of QC OLF and the formation of FIO can be sighted as an example).

Further more, from these new dynamics also arises new changes that produces another environment that facilitates new thinking chemistry and therefore, Oromians behavior. That new behavior therefore is a competition among groups and individuals who want to grab political power in Ethiopia via a simply perceived smilingly short cut venues. For example, Hasen Husein, Lenco Lata and Lenco Batii believe that the Oromo nation can take the political responsibility in Ethiopia and lead the horn of African nation. I believe that the Dawud Ibsa group thas been pressed very hard to take this very direction.

It is this dynamics what brought us to the current split facilitated by quest for the upcoming year 2010 Ethiopian election. For the Lencoos, every election time in Ethiopia brings new possibilities yet the Dawud group is kind of slow when it comes to reacting to this idea and thus friction have developed. At this point, the general Galchu’s team seems to be courageous enough to jump on the Ethiopian political wagon of 2010. Both sides finger pointing or resorting to their tribal groupings is simply a very common reaction of those who are attempting to survive and rise from their political death.

At any event, the political correlation between the OLF and the TPLF is what resulted in frustrating political environment observed since year 1991.

To further dig deep into the roots of the conflict, the correlations between conflicts inside the OLF, among the Oromians, OPDO’s expansion to Diaspora and TPLF’s strength, including current and past challenges needs to be investigated by first asking essential questions such as;'

• Does the new political environment affect Oromo unity? How?

• What observations correlate what the TPLF does in Finfinnee and the split inside the OLF?

• How can we understand the correlation between OLF’s weakness and Oromians desire to join the OPDO?

For example, Oromians return back to Finfinnee and taking land from the TPLF or joining the Ethiopian millennium party is caused by OLF’s inability to minimized TPLF’s influence. This alone compensated OPDO’s expansion into diaspora Oromo politics.

Localism also developed after OLF’s repeated exposure to localist tendencies reflected back in 1991. Most of all, the so called “winning against the TPLF via peaceful means involved the process of disarming the Oromo nation from it’s nationalist question in which a decrease of membership is observed.

Overall, the current split is about one group’s attempt to maintain control over the organization in order to rally the Oromians in this upcoming 2010 election by using the OLF for it’s brand name recognition while the second group also wishes to do the same. As we can see, this move created another round split and disturbances.

By coordinating these political environmental clues, one can arrive at a final conclusion and engage the Oromians to discuss on a specific topic and find permanent solution.

I think, once the roots of the conflict is found, a mechanism of bringing groups or individuals together can be possible. But so far, what we see is this great correlation between the idea of democratizing Ethiopia and using the separation of Oromia as a potential tool to get back to Ethiopia and rule it. But so long these consistent contextual political environment continues pairing the TPLF and the OLF, Oromian’s unity can not be materialized. So, the remaining question will be, how can the Oromians build an organization that is capable to carry out OLF’s original objective?. This is to say that the upcoming 2010 Ethiopia’s election can not and will not bring new opportunity for the Oromians.

Minneaplis, Aug 2, 2008 - The former Ethiopian military generals, Kamal Galchu and Hailu Gonfa, together with Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) inside and outside Oromia, have made successful takeover of the leadership of OLF led by Dawud Ibsa. The generals were joined with all of their reporting OLA commanders and some members of the executive committee of the OLF. This includes Lencho Lata and Dima Nagawo, former OLF deputy general secretaries and other high ranking OLF executive committee, including, Licho Bukra, Hassen Hussein, Lenco Baati and Yonatan Dhiphisa.
